Whenever the kids at school made asian jokes directed at me, my comeback was to say ‘I’m actually Eurasian’, at which point they would say, ‘No, YOU’RE asian!’. Oh, fun times.

I’m from Newfoundland so my mother’s side is mostly Irish. Mom’s big into family history but she can’t find a lot of information on her Father’s side but from what she has discovered she suspects they were indentured servants or possibly pirates. Most of my mother’s side were involved in farming so they came over later.

Dad’s side is mostly English with a bit of Irish here and there. We’ve been lucky to find documentation of my Father’s side right back to the early 18th century. They owned schooners and were involved in merchant activities so lucky for us that means there is lots of historical data to find.

When I was in the states a few years ago people thought I was Jewish because of my last name. I found out though my Grand mother my Grandfather when he was in university was often asked if he was Jewish because of the family name. I’m hoping to do a bit more research and see if I do have Jewish ancestors who may have converted to Church of England way back in the day.

While my family history isn’t full of many different cultures my cousins have all married people from different cultures.

One cousin married a fellow from Toronto who’s family came over from Pakistan.
Another Cousin is marrying a Russian
Another Cousin is married to an Austrian
One of my Aunts was married to a guy from Barbados.

    My mother is black.
    My father is black.

Although both of my parents, and the majority of my relatives on both sides of my big crazy loud overachieving family are very light-complected, I somehow turned out to be the little brown spot in the family. And people always like to tell me that I am "different" looking.

So let me break it down for you:

Dad’s mother’s family, being proper old genteel (i.e. uppity) southern folk, are Caribbean-descended french-speaking Creole (voodoo-style). Everybody is tall and pale and straight-haired and proper and southern and whatnot.

Dad’s father’s family is originally from Montana (wierd!) and were some of the Buffalo Soldiers and other black cowboys who went west after the Civil War. Apparently there is lots of native american ancestry on that side of the family, but I don’t know the specifics. Everyone is very tall and handsome and cinnamon brown and very musical. My father never knew his father, but everyone says that I look just like my grandfather. Except that I am short.

My mother’s father’s family is from Virginia and western Pennsylvania. There is native american ancestry on that side also, from up around the Ohio/New York/Canada border. Grandpop’s people were very VERY tall and extremely handsome, medium to light brown, with thick curly hair and DIMPLES (I didn’t get dimples).

My mother’s mother’s family is from Pennsylvania, Upstate New York, and Morocco. This is where the Blewish (black and jewish) genes come in. Some of the family if black. Some of the family is Jewish. Some are both. Some are neither. Whatever. About six generations back, we have tall zaftig german jews, and about four generations back we have short stocky moroccan hebrews. Everybody is either really tall or really short. Complexions range from white to pale caramel (my mom). Everybody has straight or wavy hair. Everybody is insane and yells at each other.

My (tall pale green-eyed) sister is married to a big latino guy.

Several of my cousins have married a little bit of everybody.

I remain the short brown fuzzy spot in the family. And one of my really cute asian friends keeps asking me out.
